This white paper compares the performance of Microsoft®
Windows® 2000 Professional operating system with that of
Windows 95, Windows 98, and
Windows NT® 4.0, as tested by ZD Labs, an
independent testing
source. In tests running the most popular business applications,
Windows 2000 is significantly
faster than Windows 95 and 98 on systems with 64 MB or more
of memory and significantly faster than Windows NT 4.0 on
configurations with 32 MB. It is comparable to the
performance of Windows NT 4.0 on configurations with 64 MB
and 128 MB of memory, according to the November report by ZD
Labs.

Overview

significantly better than Windows 95 and Windows 98, and is
comparable to Windows NT® 4.0 in tests running the most
popular business applications, according to ZD Labs, an
independent testing service. Windows 2000 is significantly

and 128 MB of memory, according to the November report by ZD
Labs.
Microsoft Corporation commissioned ZD Labs to compare Windows
2000 Professional with earlier versions of the operating system,
using objective, labs-based benchmarks. The lab tested five
different desktop systems and two notebook computers running
each of the four versions of Windows. Each system was tested
running Corel WordPerfect Suite8, Lotus SmartSuite and
Microsoft® Office 97. To further enhance the real-world nature
of the test, Microsoft asked the lab to install additional
business applications Lotus Notes 4.52, Microsoft FrontPage®
2000 website creation and management tool, Microsoft Project
98, Norton AntiVirus 2000, and WinZip 7.0 for the tests.
